The movie opens on a lonely atoll in the Pacific in the waning days of WWII. The tiny band of Japanese soldiers there know the end of an evil war is near. A kamikaze pilot lands, claiming his fighter plane is in trouble — but the truth is, he’s lost his nerve. Godzilla soon rises ferociously from the sea, like a slavering, fire breathing apparition from Hell or at least the Hell within the souls of these defeated, demoralized men. I won’t review it now because I don’t want to spoil it. But go see it—the best example of classical storytelling this year.
